PlayStation takes on Natal with Move controller
11.03.2010
Sony's PlayStation motion controller has been named and tagged with a release date: the Move controller will be released this Autumn and goes hand in hand with the Eye camera and a second sub-controller for a complete game experience that looks as though it will provide PS3 fans with a serious Natal alternative.
The Move controller and sub-controller together make for "intuitive navigation of in-game characters and objects" promises Sony, and in combination with the Eye camera it can detect the exact position of the player in 3D space and translate this into gameplay.
It reimains to be seen how it holds up agianst the alos unreleased Natal 3D gaming system for the Xbox 360 from Microsoft but Sony says that Move has "unmatched accuracy through its advanced motion sensors, including a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, as well as a color-changing sphere that is tracked by PlayStation Eye camera".
Move apparently captures large sweeping actions like playing tennis to small accurate movements such as using paintbrush equally well.
However, unlike Natal, you are not using your body and gestures as input, the Move controller and subcontroller are essentially like the Wiimote and accompanying nunchuck but with the high tech camera tracking of Natal.
Move will work with games from many of the big publishers
Right now Sony says there are 36 third party developers and publishers ready to work on games for PS3's Move including Activision, Konami, Ubisoft, Disney, THQ and EA.
There are no prices yet but the wireless Move motion controller will come in black, weigh about 145g and have a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
